Long downhill sections on toll roads are among the most high-risk areas for manual truck drivers. Many serious accidents occur due to improper braking techniques, especially the habit of relying continuously on the brake pedal. This practice can cause the brakes to overheat, leading to brake fade or complete brake failure.
The Danger of Relying Too Much on the Brakes
When a heavily loaded truck travels downhill, its momentum increases significantly. Continuous braking causes brake pads and discs to heat up rapidly, reducing their grip and making the vehicle harder to control.
The heavier the load, the greater the risk of braking failure. For this reason, drivers must manage their speed early, rather than waiting until the truck is already moving too fast.
Engine Braking Is the Key to Safety
One of the safest techniques when driving downhill is using engine braking. Drivers are advised to shift into a lower gear so the engine helps restrain the vehicle’s speed. This allows the truck to maintain a stable pace without placing excessive stress on the main braking system.
The brake pedal may still be used, but only gradually and when necessary, especially if engine braking alone is not sufficient.
Maintain Proper Speed and Safe Distance
In addition to braking techniques, maintaining an appropriate speed according to road conditions and traffic regulations is essential. Drivers should also keep a safe distance from surrounding vehicles to anticipate unexpected situations.
Patience and emotional control are crucial when navigating long downhill stretches. Rushing only increases the risk of accidents.
Anticipating Emergency Situations
If both the braking system and engine brake fail to function effectively, drivers must immediately steer the truck toward an emergency escape ramp or emergency lane, which is available on certain toll road sections. These lanes are specifically designed to safely stop vehicles experiencing brake failure.
Safety Is a Shared Responsibility
Driving a truck is not only about delivering cargo to its destination, but also about protecting the driver’s life and the safety of other road users. By applying proper downhill control techniques, the risk of accidents on long descents can be significantly reduced.
